Getting something for nothing

Welcome back!

While exploring Second Life and looking at all these things you cannot afford, you have probably stumbled upon getting messages in the local chat which look something like this:

“ThirdLegg Resident is now registered for today’s Midnight Mania. If our target of 666 people is met by midnight, the prize will be delivered to all participants!”

or

“Looking for a winner whose name begins with…. S.”

That means there is something you can get for free. From a piece of apparel to your own house. But for the house, you need a piece of land – which is not very cheap. On the other hand, why would you need a house? There are places all over he Grid where their owners will be happy to have you as a regular visitor which is pretty much equivalent to being a resident. Especially if you look hot.

So we will concentrate on the avatar appearance – because, in the end, this is what will speak for you in Second Life.

There are several ways to get free stuff. Different stores offer different ones. After a while, you will realize that there are so many places that are ready to fill you up with fabrics, it’ll be actually harder to have a reason to buy them for money.

In fact, it does not take a genius to figure out how to use them, so if you’re eager to go on a journey, please feel free to scroll down – there are lists of stores that offer best freebies through Midnight Manias, Lucky Chairs and such.

But, since you’re still here, let’s carry on!

Here is a pure evidence of a generosity of Second Life apparel creators, right on Marketplace. This was the top of the 3rd page while searching for free items in Apparel section.

Free items

Easy as that. You just buy the item for L$0. Can be found both in-world or on Marketplace.
Pros: You instanly get something for nothing. No time or resources consumed.
Cons: Usually it’s some of the creator’s old creations, so might be not the best quality.

In ~Sassy!~ mainstore, you can get everything on this wall for free. After joining the group. Which is also free.

Group Gifts

Join the required group, collect the item. That is all. Just like buying it for L$0.
Pros: Instantly getting the item. No time or resources consumed.
Cons: The group might not be free to join.

[AdN] Designs has always been generous regarding free outfits for both guys and girls. And the quality never disappoints!

Lucky Chairs/Lucky Boards

Once it shows the letter your Second Life name begins with, you sit on the chair/click the board. The item is yours!
Pros: Quality, low time consumption, the possibility of going AFK and just checking the chairs from time to time.
Cons: Sometimes it takes a while for your letter to come up. Sometimes even a long while…

Midnight Mania boards at Alice Project. One to the left for everyone, two others for the group members (which is not free to join).

MM – Midnight Mania

You click it once, and once the clock strikes twelve, an item is delivered directly to your inventory.
Pros: The item is guaranteed to you. Lowest time consumption – just one click!
Cons: You have to wait until midnight to get the item. If the needed amount of participants is not met by midnight, nobody gets nothing*.
* luckily, it never happens in popular stores

Guess & Win

A board with a certain amount of squares, one of which displays the prize. You have to pick another square behind which supposedly hides the picture that matches the displayed one. How to guess? Don’t try. It depends solely on your luck.
Pros: Since usually placed in stores where there are also lucky chairs or camping chairs, a good way to pass time while waiting for your letter/waiting for the camping time to run out. Or just to pass time in general.
Cons: Might happen to be very time-consuming.

Sometimes the prize changes daily, sometimes it doesn't. The one located at Grumble does

Prizes For Picks

Add the store to profile picks, then collect the item. Almost like buying the item for L$0 – and here, the store gets an additional promotion through your profile.
Pros: Instantly getting the item.
Cons: None found.

Looks like we're late. Check .::.ENVIOUS Creations Mainstore.::. from time to time, maybe you'll be among the first ones to get the next prize?

Giveaway Madness

Join the group, then collect the item. Again, like buying the item for L$0.
Pros: Instantly getting the item. There is limited amount of them available, so it can count as somewhat unique.
Cons: The group might not be free to join – and you often have to. These ones are rare to be found in stores. Also, it can run out of prizes by the time you find it.

They offer camp prizes for both guys and girls at .:LoLa:. Creations now. Not bad, huh? The quality is nice too. If you need to leave your PC for an hour or two, you can park your avatar right on one of these armchairs

Camping

You spend some time in a particular place (usually sitting, usually in a comfy chair), and once the time is out, you get the item.
Pros: You are guaranteed the item. High time consumption, but you know how much you have to spend there, and can just go AFK for that amount of time.
Cons: If your camping session is interrupted (by a sim restart, or Internet connection loss, or any other reason), you have to start over.

Check Hunts & Hunters Resource Center from time to time for current and upcoming hunts. Eventually, you won't have time for anything else on Second Life

Hunts

Gridwide and simwide. Free of charge and not. All kinds of themes, all kinds of stores. You go to the store and search for a certain object inside it. After buying it, you get an item from this store and a landmark to the next one.
Pros: Going places. Improving your pixel-hunting skill. Getting unique items you will never ever have a chance to get.
Cons: In many hunts (but not all of them), you have to pay a little, but price for the prize. They are pretty time-consuming and might cause frustation if you spend too much time in one place looking for the desired item.

If you’ve got a lot of time and rather go explore Second Life, keep the landmarks of locations with Midnight Manias and Prizes for Picks – it takes less than 5 minutes to go there, click the board and teleport to another place. If you need to spend a considerable amount of time in real life (like go to a store, for example), you can leave your avatar to camp, and when you’re available, you will possess an item as a bonus. Lucky Chairs are an option when you’re busy with something, but not too far away from the PC and can check the letters from time to time. Finally, Lucky Chairs with fast-changing letters and Guess & Wins are for those who wants to take a break from other activities, but without leaving Second Life.

Also:
There is a very good blog that will keep you informed about where and how you can obtain something good for nothing – check it often, it’s updated several times a day! It’ll help you look like a Hollywood superstar within few days. Within few months, you’ll be getting lost in your own inventory. Enjoy!
